Profile of Defense Secretary Bob Gates
Good article from the NYTimes. They've run a couple of these in depth pieces -- I think the last one was on Hank Paulson. The new crop of people in the administration is such a marked improvement over the original batch. I wonder what (or who) drove this change... and what might have happened if they'd been there seven years ago.

Yes and no. The new crop is indeed an improvement over the last, but what changed is that Bush no longer had any choice but to listen to the more reasonable voices that reached his ear. The political backlash that resulted from his failed policies is, I think, more responsible for the moderation than the new blood. (But yeah, they're definitely better.)
